       Specialist Training (TSST) in Maths

Seven sessions which focus on KS3 and KS4 mathematics teaching.  Each session involves theoretical and practical ideas and allows delegates to increase their confidence in knowledge, understanding and delivery of mathematical content.

Who is this course for?

This course is for teachers who are teaching maths outside their personal specialism and may not have studied mathematics beyond KS4 or may need a refresher on subject knowledge.

What are the objectives or outcomes?

On this programme participants will:

  • Gain an insight into key concepts and teaching methods for mathematics
  • Be introduced to an extensive range of online and other resources
  • Check and improve their mathematical knowledge of KS3 and KS4 techniques

This course is hosted at Sandringham School in St Albans and Roundwood Park School in Harpenden.

  • Discussion of alternative delivery methods
  • Tasks to develop personal understanding
  • Ideas for delivering concepts
  • Gap task on handling misconceptions
  • Gap task on KS4 knowledge

Meet the Facilitators


Leanne Ungaro

Leanne Ungaro

Leanne is Assistant Director of Learning for Maths at Sandringham School as well as Maths SLE for the Alban TSA.  She an expert practitioner who is dedicated to raising the profile of Mathematics and is supporting the NCEMT with the local Maths Hub.  Leanne was a Hertfordshire Leading Maths Teacher from September 2008 to 2012 and has supported the Further Maths Network in delivering support for the Cambridge STEP entry exam.  She has also led a series of very successful parent-pupil workshops, to encourage parents to become more active in their child’s mathematical development.  In addition Leanne has produced materials for A level which are used in several Hertfordshire Schools and have been shared nationally on the Edexcel Maths Emporium.

Val Pritchard

Val Pritchard

Val divides her time between work as a Leading Practitioner at Roundwood Park School and as the Further Maths Support Programme Area Coordinator for Herts, Harlow and Luton.  She has extensive experience in delivering and evaluating teaching and learning. Through her work with the Further Maths Support Programme she is completely up-to-date with new aspects of GCSE and A level as well as the background topics that provide a foundation at KS2 and KS3. She has NCETM Level 3 Professional Development Lead Accreditation. Her particular interests centre around the support for students and teachers as they engage in problem solving activities and new curricula at KS4 and KS5.
