A key aim of this workshop is to get pastoral leaders together to share good practice and personal experiences. We hope to support these professionals in making links across schools. We also aim to look at examples of the sort of challenging situations Heads of Year and Directors of Learning face on a day to day basis and work towards finding ways to improve the response. In the sessions we will explore not only intervention for students needing support but also the best ways to improve relationships with parents. In addition, we hope to revisit the role of tutors in community building within your year groups.
This course will run on the following date at Sir John Lawes School and will be a 3hr session from 3.00pm to 6.00pm.

Who is this course for?
Current pastoral leaders looking to develop their practice in dealing with challenging situations, supporting students through innovative intervention strategies and building community and capacity within their pastoral team.
What are the intended outcomes of the session?
In this workshop participants will:
- Collaborate in order to consider good practice in dealing with challenging encounters with parents
- Look at some student case studies to explore a variety of ways to intervene with students needing support
- Explore how tutors can be used to help build a community within the year group and support Heads of Year/Directors of Learning effectively
Meet the facilitators
Rikki Howard has been a pastoral leader at Sir John Lawes for 9 Years and is well versed in supporting students in both KS3 and KS4. He has developed successful strategies to support in engaging challenging students and is particularly skilled in supporting boys to engage with their learning. Rikki is particularly interested in how we can support students as individuals whilst still enabling them to thrive academically.
Grace Aikman has been a pastoral leader at Sir John Lawes for three years working predominantly with students and their families at Key Stage Three Level. She is interested in the process of creating mini communities within year groups in Secondary School. Her work in her NQT year as Anti-Bullying Co-Ordinator has supported her is dealing with issues of peer mediation as well as bullying incidents. Most recently, she has developed a parent coffee morning to bridge the gap between home and school.
