Maths for Non-Specialists 2020-21

This programme is designed to upskill teachers who are teaching Maths as a non-specialist subject and will consist of four sessions from 2.30 to 4.30pm on the following dates:

  • Session 1: Thursday, 11th February 2021
  • Session 2: Monday, 15th March 2021
  • Session 3: Thursday, 6th May 2021
  • Session 4: Monday, 24th May 2021

The objectives of this programme are to:

  • improve subject knowledge of mathematics content.
  • to enhance knowledge of subject specific pedagogy and teaching and learning ideas.
  • Increase confidence in delivering mathematics lessons up to GCSE level.

Outline of each session:

Session 1: Teaching Number and Proportion
This session will explore the structure of the number system and go into some more detail about how we deal with proportion in maths. We will look at how we can help students understand these concepts through use of physical (or virtual) manipulatives and visual models.
Session 2: Teaching Shape/Space/Geometry
This session will look at what is expected of students at KS3 in terms of shape and space, how to make sense of length/area/volume formulae and units. We will also look at the power of examples and non-examples for helping students understand definitions and pre-empting misconceptions.
Session 3: Removing the mysteries of scientific Casio calculators & Teaching Data/Probability
Introduction to the use of scientific Casio calculators, suitable for non-specialist maths teachers and teaching assistants.
We will also look at some of the data and probability work which comes up at KS3 and how students can take a practical and active approach in lessons to understanding these concepts
Session 4: Teaching Algebra
This session will build on the foundations from the rest of the course to look at some of the Algebra that is taught at KS3 and beyond and how you can help students understand it with a series of questions involving minimal variations which provoke discussion

Reporting instructions will be emailed to you a few days before each session and sessions will take place either virtually or face to face in accordance with COVID guidelines at the time.

Jeff Hughes started his career as a qualified teacher in Hertfordshire and since then has worked in schools in South Africa and London before returning to Hertfordshire as Curriculum Lead for Maths at St Albans Girls’ School.

Meet the Facilitators

Lily Pratt – Lead Learning Supervisor, Sandringham School

Lily is the lead learning supervisor at Sandringham school and has held this post for nearly 2 years.

She believes cover supervisors play a vital role in guaranteeing that learning takes place in the absence of the class teacher by creating a continuity that ensures the lesson has meaning and allows for student progression.

 

Steven Cotton – Teacher of English, Sandringham School

Steven has worked as a learning supervisor for a year at Sandringham School. He is currently training as an English teacher through the Alban Federation.

New to being a Form Tutor 2020-21

This is a pre-recorded webinar which will be available from 15th September.

This session will look at ideas for constructive tutor time and will include strategies which can be implemented to get the best from your form group and will be delivered by Richard Davis in the form of a pre-recorded webinar.

Who is this course for?

This course is for NQTs and teachers who are new to a pastoral role.

What are the objectives or outcomes?

This course will support you in:

  • Giving an overview of the importance of the pastoral system with regards to academic achievement and solidifying the home-school partnership.
  • Discussing new ideas for forming good working relationships with parents and students.
  • Assisting students in starting each day in the best way possible.

Meet the facilitators:

Richard Davis

Rich is currently a Year 8 form tutor at Sandringham but has over 10 years’ experience in a range of Pastoral roles in the school.  He has been a Head of Year for 5 years and an Assistant Headteacher in charge of behaviour, pastoral care and safeguarding for 2 years.  Following a change of role, he is back on the front line as a form tutor and reaffirmed in his belief that it is one of the most important, and yet sometimes over looked, roles in a school.

 

 

Currently, Rich is working as KS4 Maths Coordinator and as such understands first-hand the balance and possible tensions between pastoral and academic aims but is a firm believer that when young people feel safe and happy, they are most likely to achieve their best.

“The course provided me with a great basis for approaching the important role of the form tutor.  It was valuable to network with other NQTs who were using a range of strategies with the tutees.  The course facilitators were honest, professional and personable which made discussing often hard to handle situations that may arise in a pastoral remit, easy.  I have just recently been appointed as a head of year 7 and intend to use some of the strategies with my own tutor team in the near future.”

Developing Leaders (non-teaching staff) 2020-21

AS WE WOULD LIKE THIS PROGRAMME TO CONSIST OF FACE TO FACE SESSIONS WE HAVE DECIDED TO POSTPONE UNTIL THE SPRING TERM DUE TO THE CONSTANTLY CHANGING COVID GUIDELINES.

WE WILL COMMUNICATE NEW DATES IN DUE COURSE.

We are delighted to offer this programme consisting of three sessions for support staff leaders in schools hosted at schools across the alliance as follows:

  • Session 1: Leadership styles and having difficult conversations
  • Session 2: Financial management
  • Session 3: Strategies to promote effective change

Who is this course for?

Colleagues involved in managing and leading others within a school setting.  Delegates may be aspiring to be in role or currently in a position of leading a team.

What are the objectives or outcomes?

On this programme participants will:

  • Reflect on their personal strengths
  • Develop skills of leadership
  • Explore their own vision and values

Tessa Miles

During her career, Tessa has held a number of roles: Head of History, Head of House, Head of Faculty and Professional Learning Mentor. She was awarded AST status in 2008 and has since used her skills and knowledge to support NQTs in Hertfordshire as well as colleagues in her own school to develop their teaching and learning strategies.

 


Hazel Wale

During her career, Hazel has held a number of senior roles including Assistant Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and more recently the Chief Operations Officer for the Scholars’ Education Trust. In her leadership roles, Hazel has been responsible for support staff winning the nationally prestigious “School Business Manager of the Year Award” and becoming a Fellow of the Association of School Business Managers. She has extensive experience of delivering keynote speeches and providing bespoke training on a range of different themes and topics.

 

Emerging Middle Leaders 2020-21

This programme comprises six twilight sessions run throughout the school year. There is a celebration event for all ‘graduates’ at the end of the year.

You will be required to attend the following twilight sessions which run from 4.00pm to 5.30pm.  Please note that all sessions will be delivered remotely where face to face meetings are still not viable.
